Money can’t buy you the Governor’s Mansion in November, Creigh

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

When it comes to union contributions, Creigh Deeds has taken more than his fair share from AFSCME.  Recently, AFSCME gave Deeds a $400,000 contribution, which brings their grand total contribution to over $900,000.

With contributions flowing in from other unions, including SEIU, the United Food & Commercial Workers, Communication Workers of America COPE, and the Virginia state AFL-CIO, Deeds has raked in nearly $1.9 million to help pay for negative television ads.  These are the same ads that have been driving more and more Virginians away from Deeds’ campaign.

Since Virginia is a right-to-work state, it only goes to prove that Deeds will not look after the common worker.

McDonnell Up in Recent Rasmussen Poll

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Rasmussen Reports released their recent polling numbers on the Virginia Governor’s race today. Bob McDonnell still holds a lead over Creigh Deeds. McDonnell is up by nine points and this is a seven point jump from thirteen days ago.

Virginians are beginning to reject Deeds’ negative campaigning and realizing that Deeds does not offer cohesive plans to solve some of the major issues facing the Commonwealth.

According to the Augusta Free Press, the Democratic National Committee is holding on to a $5 million contribution, due to the concern that Deeds is focusing too much on a graduate school thesis that McDonnell wrote in 1989. What does this show if the DNC is giving up on Deeds?

Deeds, Wagner, and Shannon Love Tax Increases

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Creigh Deeds finally released his plan for transportation in The Washington Post this morning. This plan includes something that we could see coming from miles away…tax increases to fund transportation. Now, Creigh Deeds is no stranger to tax increases, as he voted to raise the gas tax, while serving in the state senate.

Lieutenant Governor candidate, Jody Wagner, also jumped on board by saying that she would work with Deeds to improve transportation, even if it included taxes. (Source: The Washington Post). Considering that Wagner miscalculated the budget, while serving as Secretary of Finance, it is no surprise that she would be in favor of raising taxes to solve Virginia’s transportation woes.

Since the Democratic ticket in Virginia has two tax lovers, you know that Steve Shannon will also join their ranks. Shannon’s record from the General Assembly shows that he has voted consistently against taxpayers by voting for tax increases. In fact, one of his first votes as Delegate was against $400 million in tax relief. After that vote, he followed it up by voting for one of the largest tax increases in Virginia history.

Does Virginia need more taxes, especially during these challenging economic times? No! You can guarantee under a Deeds/Warner/Shannon Administration that your taxes will skyrocket.

Cuccinelli Receives NFIB Endorsement

Friday, September 18th, 2009

Attorney General candidate Ken Cuccinelli received the endorsement of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB)/Virginia SAFE (Save America’s Free Enterprise) Trust.

Virginia State Director of the NFIB, Julia Hammond said, “Ken Cuccinelli clearly understands the challenges facing Virginia’s small business, the Commonwealth’s largest employer. We have absolutely no doubt that Ken will protect the people of Virginia while also protecting the right of entrepreneurs and small, family businesses to own, operate and grow their businesses.” She continued, “Sen. Cuccinelli has distinguished himself as a true friend of small business. He was a leader on the eminent domain issue – a core concern to so many small businesses and family farms. His near perfect track record on our issues earned him the prestigious Guardian of Small Business Award in 2007. We need an attorney general who understands the challenges small business owners, their employees and their families face when it comes to issues such as legal reform, property rights and taxes,” Hammond concluded, “We are proud to endorse Ken Cuccinelli for attorney general. We will do everything within our power to help Ken Cuccinelli become Virginia’s next attorney general.”

Cuccinelli has fought to pass legislation, in the State Senate, that would protect property rights, lower taxes, and provide more incentives to keep and bring businesses to the Commonwealth. Cuccinelli said, of the endorsement, “As a small business owner myself, I am proud to accept the endorsement of the NFIB.” He continued, “I understand that small businesses are crucial to growing our economy. Small businesses are the engines that produce – on average – about two-thirds of net new jobs. For that reason, as Attorney General of Virginia, I will work to prevent the over-regulation of small businesses, which would prevent any economic recovery in Virginia.”

Virginia Democrats Should Return ACORN Contributions

Friday, September 18th, 2009

The Republican Party of Virginia has called on the Democratic candidates for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney General to give back any and all contributions from the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) due to their ties with ACORN. SEIU President Andy Stern sits on ACORN’s Advisory Council, and the SEIU has donated a combined $450,000 to the Democratic candidates and the Democratic Party committees in 2008 and 2009.

ACORN has been in some trouble lately with promoting criminal behaviors, like tax evasion, abetting prostitution, and sex trafficking for minors. Both the House and Senate have voted to cut off funding for ACORN. Additionally, SEIU gave ACORN more than $4 million since 2006-2007, and SEIU locals 100 and 880 are allied organizations to ACORN. Better yet, ACORN Founder S. Wade Rathke referred to SEIU 880 as “one of the pillars of the ACORN Family.” Rathke was also handpicked by Stern to direct SEIU’s nationwide organizing projects.
With all of this corruption from both SEIU and ACORN, Creigh Deeds, Jody Wagner, and Steve Shannon should do what’s right and return the contributions. Pat Mullins, chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia, called on the democratic candidates to give back the money. Mullins said:

“It’s pretty clear how intermingled ACORN is with SEIU,” said Chairman Mullins. “They have become a focus of attention in Congress for these recent disgusting scandals involving everything from under-aged prostitution to tax fraud. Throw in what we already know about their bogus voter registration efforts and the information is pretty condemning. That Democrats would gleefully take money from a closely tied organization tells you what you want to know – they’ll check principles at the door, so long as the check clears. Deeds, Wagner, Shannon and the rest of the Democrats should give it all back.”

Attorney General candidate Ken Cuccinelli made a statement asking Shannon to return the funds:

“Steve Shannon has received tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from the SEIU – whose link and close working relationship with the renegade organization ACORN is well documented” said Senator Ken Cuccinelli. “SEIU’s long standing financial support and its affiliation as an allied organization of ACORN across the country requires a repudiation of the relationship” added Cuccinelli.

“I applaud the United States Congress for moving to de-fund ACORN of any tax payer dollars, a move that should have occurred years ago. ACORN’s well documented illegal activities, including voter fraud, should give all Americans pause. Voters have a right to know that ACORN affiliated and allied organizations are funding Democrat campaigns this year in Virginia, and what do they expect in return?” concluded Cuccinelli.”

VASocialConservative has a great post featuring a web video released by Cuccinelli.

Ken Cuccinelli Responds to Prison Book Ban

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

State Senator (and current Attorney General candidate) Ken Cuccinelli released a statement about the recent decision by Virginia prison officials to ban the program, Books Behind Bars. Books Behind Bars, which was initiated by Quest Institute, provides free books to prisoners, and has been cited as a way of “productively employing his or her time while incarcerated.”

“Programs like Books Behind Bars provide the literature necessary for more effective educational and faith based rehabilitation programs, and scientific studies have long shown that educational and faith based programs greatly reduce prison recidivism. In 2001, a national study on the effects of prison education programs on recidivism, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, showed that 22% of inmates who attended education classes in prison returned after three years, versus almost 31% who had not participated. (Steurer, 2001) In 2003, a study of the Prison Fellowship Ministry’s rehabilitation program, conducted by Byron Johnson of the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Research on Religion and Urban Civil Society, found that graduates of Prison Fellowship’s program were less likely than non-graduates to return to a life of crime. (Johnson, 2003)

The Washington Post reports that this program was banned for two main reasons. (A Title Wave of Controversy, 09/10/09) Apparently, Quest volunteers, while packing the books to ship them to a prison, overlooked two items — a compact disc packaged in a textbook and a paper clip — and shipped them along with the books. Prison officials have also stated that it creates too much work for corrections officers, who have to search the incoming books and the cells of the prisoners, many of whom possess more than their legally allotted 13 books. However, the Post also reports that both of these contraband items were found before they made it into an inmate’s hands and that the Quest Institute has volunteered to limit the number of books sent to each prisoner.

Cuccinelli, who currently serves on the Rehabilitation and Social Services Committee in the Virginia State Senate, believes that Books Behind Bars offers the rehabilitation, as well as, education for those who are currently serving time in prison. Cuccinelli also pledged to work with Virginia prison officials to bring back this program and work to facilitate other successful rehabilitation programs, such as Prison Fellowship Ministries.

Big Endorsement Today for Bob McDonnell

Monday, September 14th, 2009

The National Rifle Association endorsed Bob McDonnell today in the Virginia Governor’s race. The NRA has over 120,000 members across the Commonwealth. In 2005, the NRA endorsed Creigh Deeds over Bob McDonnell in the Attorney General’s race, so one has to wonder what changed over the course of four years.

Here is the statement released by the McDonnell campaign:

Speaking about the endorsement, McDonnell remarked, “Over the course of my career in public service, I have worked to protect and uphold the Second Amendment rights guaranteed in the Bill of Rights to the United States Constitution. The Second Amendment rights of law abiding Virginians must be respected and protected. That is what I did while serving as Virginia’s Attorney General. We worked to stop unauthorized attempted straw purchases by outside agents operating in the Commonwealth. We moved quickly to make the Commonwealth one of the first states to file an amicus brief in support of the individual right to bear arms in the historic Supreme Court Case of District of Columbia v. Heller. As governor I will continue to defend the individual right to keep and bear arms, and stand on the side of Virginia’s law abiding gun owners. The National Rifle Association is committed to protecting our constitutional rights and I am honored to receive this endorsement.”

Chris Cox, NRA-PVF Chairman and NRA Institute for Legislative Action Executive Director noted, “Bob McDonnell is an effective leader for Virginia hunters and gun owners. His opinions and actions as an attorney general have protected and enhanced the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Virginians. His zero-tolerance attitude toward criminals makes him the best choice for governor. We ask every Virginia hunter, gun owner and Second Amendment advocate to vote McDonnell for Governor this November.”

Of course, there are some naysayers on the left who claim that this might help Creigh Deeds. Blogger Not Larry Sabato claims that this will give Northern Virginia liberals another reason to pay closer attention to the differences between the two candidates.

Creigh Deeds has remained silent on the issues of core importance to this campaign, such as improving the economy and addressing the issue of transportation. If Northern Virginia liberals are disengaged, what makes anyone believe that this could energize the Deeds campaign?
