Today’s installment of Virginia Buzz features tax increases for Fairfax County residents and news from the Virginia House Republican Caucus.

First, on to Fairfax County, where in a 7-3 vote, the Board of Supervisors voted in favor of bringing back the car tax (decal fee) and increase the storm water tax. The three voting against the tax increase were:

  • John Cook, Braddock
  • Pat Herrity, Springfield
  • Michael Frey, Sully

The General Assembly convened today to vote on Governor Bob McDonnell’s budget recommendations. The House Republican Caucus also voted on a new caucus chairman to replace Del. Sam Nixon (Chesterfield), who recently resigned to take over as Chief Information Officer of the Virginia Information Technology Agency. Del. Tim Hugo (Centreville/Clifton) was elected as Chairman. You can read more about the caucus here.

Here’s a roundup of some interesting articles throughout the Virginia blogosphere.

  • Bearing Drift has a roundup from all of the GOP Congressional Campaigns in Virginia. It’s spot-on analysis.
  • The General Assembly passed legislation to grant Virginians the freedom to decide whether or not they have health insurance. Tom White over at Virginia Right! has a great post up on the health care issue.
  • What is it with the General Assembly and their obsession with raising fees this session? The budget deficits have caused great discussions and debate about fee increases to generate revenue. Family Foundation Blog has a great post up encouraging the General Assembly to tame its appetite for these increases.
  • Could a tax hike on businesses in Virginia be enacted? According to the rightwingliberal at Virginia Virtucon, the House of Delegates is strongly considering the tax hike, while Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling believes that a tax hike would break promises of a general tax increase.
  • Meanwhile, The Washington Post’s Virginia Politics Blog reports that hundreds protested an Arlington Delegate’s invitation for a Fairfax Imam to deliver the opening prayer during the House session.

Here’s some buzz from the blogosphere in Virginia. As the General Assembly session winds down in Richmond, I plan to add the top ten bills from this past session as the encore.

  • Brian Kirwin at Bearing Drift has a great article explaining the difference between fees and tax increases. While I often argue that fees are taxes in disguise, I think his analysis is spot-on.
  • Richmond Times-Dispatch reported on the rally at the Capitol protesting fee increases.
  • This weekend, the Loudoun County Republican Committee held elections nominating their new party Chairman. LCRC nominated Mark Sell, and Greg over at Black Velvet Bruce Li has more details.
  • Jeanne Monahan over at FRC Blog reports that T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria will be housing a clinic promoting family planning for youth.
  • Meanwhile, could this be true?!? Del. Ward Armstrong (D-Henry) is considering running for higher office, perhaps Governor or Lieutenant Governor in 2013. You’ve got to love the smackdown during the House session by House Speaker Bill Howell (R-Stafford). H/T to Shaun Kenney and Mason Conservative
  • Last, but not least…I reported Thursday that Rep. Charlie Rangel’s scandal has hit Virginia with three Congressmen (Glenn Nye, Tom Perriello, and Gerry Connolly) accepting contributions from him in 2008. According to National Journal’s Hotline on Call, all three have donated their contributions to charity.

When have Increased Gas Taxes been the End-All, Solve-All Solutions?

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

The major focus of the Democratic statewide candidates in Virginia have been raising gas taxes or at least, implying that they might be open to the idea.   Creigh Deeds talked about raising the gas tax by more than $1 billion after the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce debate, then after the debate in Richmond earlier this week to fund his not-yet-released transportation plan.  Jody Wagner, who is running for Lieutenant Governor, has a history of supporting higher taxes, and she will support Deeds’ initiative.  Steve Shannon, who is running for Attorney General, also supported several tax increases while serving as Delegate.

Do we need a Governor and Lieutenant Governor who is in favor of raising taxes on Virginia families?  In light of the current economic situation in Virginia (especially Southside, where unemployment is at 20%), working families will be hurt by these tax increases to fund transportation.  It will also hurt those in Northern Virginia, who will be hammered with another tax on transportation, only to see that money being redirected to other areas in the Commonwealth.

Perhaps, we should look for leadership that recognizes the detrimental impact that increased taxes will have on families and will work towards common sense solutions to fix Virginia’s transportation woes.
